Rural Info

The Challenge

National parks, rural trails and remote outdoor locations need to communicate changing conditions to visitors (trail closures, fire risk levels, flood warnings, walking distances and wayfinding) but are far from any power supply. Printed boards become outdated and cannot reflect changing safety conditions. Getting information to people in remote areas quickly, when it matters, has never had a practical solution.

The Solution

Chroma Digital colour e-ink signs run entirely on solar and battery power. A compact panel and small leisure battery keep a sign operating indefinitely off-grid. Trail conditions, safety notices and wayfinding distances update wirelessly from a ranger's desk within seconds, with no site visit, printed replacement or power infrastructure. The sign holds its last image without consuming any power until the next update arrives.

Trail conditions and safety notices when they matter

Trail conditions can change in hours: a path flooded after overnight rain, a fire-risk rating upgraded from moderate to extreme, a temporary closure after storm damage. In remote locations, getting that information to visitors before they set off can prevent accidents and wasted journeys.

Chroma Digital signs let park rangers and countryside managers push updated notices from any web browser. A fire-risk level change reaches every sign in the park within seconds. When conditions improve, the ranger restores the normal display with a single action, with no staff deployment to the site and no printed replacement.

Wayfinding distances for remote areas

At a trailhead or path junction, visitors need clear distances: to the visitor centre, a nearby lookout, a campground, or the next town. Chroma Digital’s colour e-ink panel presents this information in a clean, colour-coded layout that is readable from a distance and legible in full sun.

Colour e-ink renders six distinct colours (red, orange, yellow, green, teal, and near-black) with strong contrast, producing wayfinding panels that are sharper and more readable than weathered painted signs, and far more practical to update than any printed alternative. A ranger can correct a distance or add a new trail from the office; the sign updates within seconds.

Solar-powered for genuinely off-grid sites

Colour e-ink consumes power only during the brief period an image is being updated. Between updates (which may be hours apart for a wayfinding sign) the panel draws nothing at all. A modestly sized solar panel and a standard leisure battery keep a Chroma Digital sign operating through a UK winter with no mains connection.

This opens locations that are simply impractical for any other digital signage technology: footpath junctions in national parks, riverside access points, cliff-top lookouts, remote trailheads, rural single-track road junctions, and forestry sites.

Connectivity loss handled gracefully

Remote locations often have intermittent mobile or Wi-Fi coverage. Chroma Digital signs hold their last image indefinitely if the connection drops, so visitors always see current information rather than a blank screen. When connectivity is restored, the sign automatically fetches and displays the latest content.

National park authorities, rural district councils, forestry services and outdoor land managers use Chroma Digital to bring live, accurate information to locations no other digital display technology can reach.

One platform for every sign in your estate

Compose content, preview it pixel-perfectly, and push it to any sign from a single browser tab. No specialist hardware or on-site visits. What you see in the preview is exactly what the panel displays.
